Is it too high to install a television above a fireplace?
Using some standard industry calculations, the answer can be achieved mathematically. So before answering, there are some key measurements needed: 1) distance between seat and screen, and 2) head height at the seated position.
A comfortable, upward viewing limit to the middle of a television (or screen) is 15 degrees above the horizontal viewing plane. Mathematically, take the tangent of 15 degrees times the viewing distance, plus the head height at the seated position. Translation > (d X .26795)+hh [where d=distance to screen; and hh=head height > keeping all measurements consistent in terms of units]. For example, a TV is 8 ft. from the sofa. When seated on the sofa, head height is 45 inches above the finished floor. Converting to inches > (96 X .26795)+45 = 70.72 inches. Therefore, the center of the television screen should be no higher that 70 3/4 inches.
