TiVO HD Discontinued?

No more TiVO HD DVRs!  The company’s web site, https://www3.tivo.com/store/boxes.do, list the devices as “out-of-stock.” Product drops have occasionally been a sign that TiVO is introducing a new model (as in the case of Series 3 units).  In the HD arena, only high-capacity TiVo HD XL is the company’s only real option.  This action comes not long after TiVO unintentionally (on purpose) leaked the TiVO Premiere and hinted at a seemingly imminent upgrade.

The Premiere would enable TiVO offer multi-show HD recording without needing separate CableCARDs.  The TiVO Premiere (PDF) manual (inadvertently released last year) cites the inclusion of a multi-stream CableCARD slot that would let it record more than one TV show without a second card.

Those of you with TiVO units know multi-stream CableCARDs do not function properly in today’s TiVO units.  Comcast technicians are quick to point out this TiVO deficiencies when trying to sell you on the Comcast DVR (and associated monthly charge).  It seems they also forget to tell you that traditional CableCARDs will function in the older units.

Other changes to the Premiere:  absence of the dial-up modem and no S-Video input.

I love my Tivo! the interface is so much nicer than the stupid cable DVR. but alas, I think I will be forced to make the switch. Any insight into the viable future of Tivo?

No date has been provided. My recommendation is to wait. TiVO kicks butt compared to other DVRs.
