BluRay players will no longer have component outputs on models introduced after December 31st of this year. Yes, that this year! We keep talking about “Sunset Analog” but is anybody listening?
After December 31, 2010, manufacturers will not introduce new hardware with video outputs supplying more than a standard definition (SD) resolution. So, resolutions like 720p; 1080i; or 1080p will no longer be accessible through any connection other than an HDMI cable connection.
Don’t read the “new hardware” as a loop hole, thinking your old gear will be ‘OK.’ After January 1, 2011, software manufacturers will also be able to insert something called an Image Constraint Token into any Blu-ray disc. This data feed will turn the high-definition component video output OFF on the player.
Custom electronic desigers and installers are already addressing “work around” solutions including send/receive units, wireless HDMI transmissions, internet appliances, and more. But, when the dust settles, your interest would best be served to have planned for HDMI – NOW!
Keep in mind, that this is true today for BluRay players, but it does not currently apply to other high-definition sources, including satellite and cable boxes – at least not yet!
