Last week on Facebook, an old high school buddy sent an invite to join, “Google on Main – The World’s First & Longest.” Having no idea what this was about, the IGNORE button was quickly pressed. How little I knew…
With only a couple of weeks to go, cities across the country are trying to attract Google into building its much-anticipated fiber-optic network on their turf. Greenville, SC happens to be the latest entrant in the race.
“We’re all going to make history by forming the world’s first and longest human Google chain in a massive nighttime community” the FB page cites. “… on March 20th, you can take part in history by helping to create the world’s first and longest human Google chain! This huge, nighttime community-created event called “Google on Main” will be held in downtown Greenville on Main Street and will require quite a few glowsticks. We’re not just doing this for fun, we’re also doing it to help Greenville win its bid for Google Fiber (Google’s experimental ultra-high speed broadband network that is 100x faster than current broadband and would be available in EVERY Greenville home). Google may only select one city in the US, and it needs to be Greenville, SC.” The page concludes with the warning, “Hundreds or perhaps thousands of glowsticks may be harmed during this event.”
Good luck Greenville! And have some fun.

In the recent past South Carolina has proven itself a wise place for companies to invest. Let’s hope the people @ Google take note.
I got a question for Greenville. How many glow stick filled BMWs can you fit in a Boeing 787.
Don’t know… but I can drive my (friend’s) BMW around town. How the handling of your 787? Let’s race. First one to determine who many glow sticks fits within their respective vehicle (our the BMW; yours the 787) wins!
Best of wishes to Greenville. Think about it. Kudos for their initiative in going after something they want as a community! Can’t remember when Charleston (or any surrounding community) did something along these lines.
Google updated its blog post 3/26/10 @ 6:40PM: With the deadline past, it says it has received more than 1,100 community responses and more than 194,000 responses from individuals. I hope G’ville kicks ass!!! Didn’t hear anything from Charleston, Mr. Agee.
