A Message from the City of Charleston’s Department of Planning, Preservation and Sustainability:
The “clean” or “green” economy is an important element of America’s emerging next economy. It will define our nation’s low carbon future while providing opportunity for workers at all levels of the income and skills distributions. In this report by Brookings, the clean economy is divided into 39 distinct segments, reflecting the economic activity involved in producing a broad spectrum of clean products, from goods such as wind turbines and solar photovoltaics to services such as mass transit and regulation. Netflix has changed its pricing plans, angered customers and effectively separated its streaming movie and DVD rental businesses. Why did Netflix change such a successful pricing plan? Netflix has recently discovered that it will have to pay higher content costs going forward and now it is us, the consumers that will have to pay for it.

Tentatively set to start in mid-July, the group that oversees the U.S. power grid is proposing an experimental test that could disrupt many electronic devices with built-in clocks. This will be an interesting experiment to see how dependent our timekeeping is on the power grid, said Demetrios Matsakis, head of the time service department at the U.S. Naval Observatory. Tweaking the power grid’s frequency is expensive and takes a lot of effort, said Joe McClelland, head of electric reliability for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. “Is anyone using the grid to keep track of time?” McClelland said. “Let’s see if anyone complains if we eliminate it.”

Cisco’s new box for AT&T U-verse made its way through the FCC’s approval process this first week of March 2011. Similar to other Cisco IPTV devices, this box differs by coming equipped with a 802.11n connection that would do well to support distributed video to multiple household WiFi components such as iPads, HDTVs, and more. The Cisco ISB7005 supports a maximum data rate of up to 300 Mbps although public debate on achieving this speed is highly suspect. Reportedly, the unit will also support in AT&T’s existing whole-home DVR system. Chatter within the technical blog sites indicate that in the product’s design, AT&T forgot to seek what their customer’s wanted and pursued what the “bean counters” insisted.
