Blockbuster’s Buggy Whip

The bricks and mortar of Blockbuster are proving to be far more burdensome for the movie rental giant. In the wake of the FCC’s initiative to expand broadband access nationwide (a major distribution channel for Netflix, iTunes, Redbox, and others), the Blockbuster distribution systems appears to be replacing the “buggy whip” a symbol for anything that is hopelessly outmoded. Two news releases from the Los Angeles Times caught our attention today; first, social networking (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, etc.) applications growing acceptance into the mobile phone markets. Secondly, was the introduction of applications that allow parents to stay “connected” with family events when obstacles (work, travel, and more) prevent attendance at these functions. (more…)

SmartHomes were in the news tonight. On a local new broadcast this evening, there was a syndicated report on the benefits of “smart home” devices available from an online retailer. Benefits included such things as remote HVAC control, CCTV, lighting control and more. I could only describe the report as “‘OMG’ Look What We Found.” (more…)
